Dr Simon Macdonald has been awarded the Review of English Studies essay prize for 2012 for his essay ‘Identifying Mrs Meeke: Another Burney Family Novelist’. His essay focuses on the writer ‘Mrs Meeke’, the most prolific English-language novelist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; he demonstrates that she can be identified as Elizabeth Meeke, a step-sister of Frances Burney, the most prestigious novelist of the period. In announcing the prize, the journal editor wrote that this was ‘a terrific find, beautifully handled, and the judgment of the editors was unanimous’. The essay will be published by Review of English Studies in 2013.
